The shear line is the gap between the plug and the housing. It plays an important role in lock picking. The driver pins are the top set of pins and fit halfway between the housing and the plug. This component is the reason why a plug is restricted from rotating freely. The key pins are the bottom set of pins and contacts the key when inserted. The springs in the lock force the driver pins into the plug so as to prevent the plug from rotating freely. When the key is inserted in the cylinder, it pushes the key pins and the driver pins. As soon as the gap between the key pins and driver pins is exactly like the shear line, the plug can be rotated, and the lock gets disengaged.
Lock Picking Tools
Lockpicking doesn’t need a lot of tools. The tension wrench is a little bent piece of metal that acts like a real key and can be used to turn the plug. Also, this wrench can be used to keep the pins at the shear line during lock picking. With a slight tension on the wrench, the binding pin will stop the plug from rotating. To determine in which direction the plug turns, we can apply pressure to the tension wrench clockwise and counterclockwise. If the tension wrench feels stiff in any direction, it might be the wrong direction of rotation. The amount of tension to be exerted is vital to lock picking.
Raking is one of the most common and easiest method for lock picking. It is done by inserting your pick into the back of the lock and pulling it across the pins repeatedly with an upward force while at the same time applying tension on the plug. This is useful for cylindrical tumbler locks, but if the lock has pins of different sizes, it gets difficult. The most efficient raking tool is the rake-type pick. These picks can have a wavy edge, diamond end or ball end.
